The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the most prestigious forest certification scheme, with over 175 million ha of certified forests worldwide. FSC’s Strategic Framework for climate change engagement recognises carbon sequestration as an environmental value that needs to be maintained and monitored. Therefore, FSC seeks to assist FSC certificate holders to cost-effectively and accurately integrate carbon monitoring and reporting into forest management and certification operations. Due to UNIQUE’s broad experience in forest carbon project development and implementation, we were contracted to undertake a comprehensive assessment of existing carbon monitoring and reporting tools and to assist certificate holders to assess climate benefits in order to capture market-related benefits.

• Develop an assessment framework for carbon monitoring and reporting tools.
• Execute a ‘Strengths - Weaknesses - Opportunities - Threats’ (SWOT) analysis.
• Classify carbon monitoring tools regarding applicability, practicability and cost-effectiveness.
• Provide recommendations on the most user-friendly carbon monitoring and reporting tools.
