Design of a Planted Forest Promotion Scheme for Multi-Purpose Plantations
Background
Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest countries and faces numerous development challenges. Under the right circumstance, the development of planted forests can bring many benefits to the country, including rural development and wood supply for both domestic demand and to support a major export industry. Although there is little history of tree plantations in the country, Mozambique has suitable land for commercial tree plantations. A lack of finance and technical support are cited as the key reasons for the lack of investment in plantations: this project paved the way for the scheme which will address these needs. UNIQUE supported technically for many years Uganda’s Sawlog Production Grant Scheme and was now commissioned to give technical advice on designing and managing a plantation incentive scheme for Zambezia Province, central Mozambique.
