Background

According to the bird directive of the European Union, management plans have to be developed for every Special Protected Area (SPA). For these management plans, the presence and condition of each bird population is evaluated, and the habitats are mapped. Specific conservation goals for the habitats are identified, and possible problems listed. Furthermore, a plan of action for each specie is drafted. In 2018, the FVA – the responsible authority for mapping forest birds in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg – tendered the mapping of forest birds in one of the biggest SPAs, covering 27.000 hectares of forest land. The most important species are mountain species like three-toed and black woodpecker, capercaillie and pygmy owl as well as boreal owl. In lower sections, stock pigeon, middle and grey-headed woodpecker are key species.

Our contribution

  • Preliminary delineation of habitats, based on aerial photography and forest information.
  • Enquiry on species presence from local specialists and forest officers.
  • Coordination of field work of five highly qualified and specialized ornithologists.
  • Final delineation of habitats and of work areas for future habitat management.
  • Written reports as modules of future management plans.
  • Discussion of findings and management plans with FVA and Nature conservation authorities.
