National REDD+ strategy development
Background
In 2009, Zambia developed a National Joint Programme (NJP) for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) under the UN REDD Programme. The country was allocated USD 4.49 million to advance the national REDD+ readiness process. The Program's goal is to prepare Zambian institutions and stakeholders for effective nationwide implementation of the REDD+ mechanism. As part of this, the National REDD+ Coordination Unit (NRCU) has facilitated and completed analytical studies to facilitate the development of the national strategy to reduce deforestation and forest degradation. UNIQUE was recruited with the overall objective of providing strategic inputs towards addressing the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.
