Background

The international financing mechanism for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in developing countries (REDD+) plays a key role in the negotiations on a post-2020 climate agreement, as well as in other processes (e.g. the Convention on Biological Diversity). This project, commissioned by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, supports the German Government in the development of REDD+ and complementary policy approaches (REDD+ Partnership, Bonn Challenge). The main objective is to identify approaches for more coherent and efficient governance of forest-related processes and policy instruments in a fragmented institutional landscape. UNIQUE supported the Federal Ministry for the Environment as a member of the German delegation in these United Nations processes.

Our contribution

  • Support REDD+ negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

  • Development of concepts for alternative governance approaches (REDD+ Partnership, Bonn Challenge).

  • Scientific policy analyses on process fragmentation and environmental governance.
