Background

Over half of Namibia’s estimated 2.1 million inhabitants live in the northern part of the country and depend mostly on rain-fed agriculture. They are extremely vulnerable to climate change impacts including increased rainfall variability, drought and heat waves. In Namibia´s Nationally Determined Contribution for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, agriculture plays an important role. The GIZ-supported project ‘Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change in Northern Namibia’ contributes to climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation through the promotion of various conservation agriculture interventions. UNIQUE was contracted to test and evaluate tools for assessing GHG emissions and mitigation potentials of the project’s set of conservation agriculture interventions.

Our contribution

  • Provision of training on mitigation potentials and GHG accounting in smallholder agriculture conditions.
  • Selection and comparison of three GHG accounting tools.
  • Field study to parametrize the tools to quantify emissions and removals of project interventions.
