Climate-Smart Nutrition and Demand Side Measures
Background
Demand-side measures for agriculture are interventions taking place between the farm gate and end-consumers in food systems. Within demand-side measures there is significant, untapped greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential. Examples include reduction of food loss and waste which conserves GHG emissions from food production that would otherwise be lost; whereas dietary change encourages the uptake of nutritious, low-GHG intensity foods. Climate action and nutrition measures are so far not well linked within development cooperation. For the GIZ Support Program to the Paris Agreement, UNIQUE proposed the concept of climate-smart nutrition and analyzed the concrete business case of fresh milk dispensers in Western Kenya.
Our contribution
- Develop a conceptual framework on climate-smart nutrition.
- Analyze a selected urban-rural food system for nutrition outcomes, adaptation and mitigation status.
- Assess interventions in the local context to achieve optimal nutrition and climate outcomes.
- Derive recommendations for German development cooperation to mainstream climate-smart nutrition.
