Background

The federal state of Baden-Württemberg has experienced an immense increase in wind power installations and further wind energy plants are planned to be built in the near future. Some bird species are especially susceptible to collisions with wind turbine rotors, including the red and black kite (Milvus milvus and Milvus migrans). In order to scientifically assess the impact of wind power expansion on these kite species, a systematic monitoring of all relevant breeding sites was conducted by the institute of environment, measurements and nature conservation of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg (LUBW). UNIQUE was commissioned to carry out monitoring in the central Black Forest and Upper Swabia areas and coordinated several ornithologists.

Our contribution

  • Mapping of breeding sites and determination of breeding success.
  • Incorporate sightings and hints from local conservation volunteers as well as hunters into mapping design.
  • Report and cartographic presentation of the results.
  • Coordination of ornithologists.
