Background

Liberia has 4.3 million ha of forests that face significant risks of deforestation and degradation. The Government seeks to balance sustainable economic growth in order to support the forest-dependent livelihoods of rural communities, whilst ensuring the effective conservation of its national and global heritage. The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility is supporting the Government of Liberia through its Forestry Development Authority to develop national emission reduction programs. The objective of this project was to conduct an initial scoping and design of two REDD+ emissions reduction programs in two forest landscapes in the South-East and North-West of the country, according to Liberia’s National REDD+ Strategy. UNIQUE was selected based on its expertise in supporting the development at landscape levels.

Our contribution

  • Development of draft design and a vision for the two selected landscapes, including stakeholder mapping.
  • Development of a draft action plan, including identification of priority activities and finance options.
  • Initial estimation of expected total carbon dioxide (tCO2) emission reductions and non-carbon benefits.
  • Assessment of technical challenges or risks related to the identified priority interventions.
  • Implementation of a gap analysis, including needs for technical assistance.
