Site analysis for wind power plants
Background
A number of assessments are required during the approval procedure for electric windmills. Amongst these is a projection of the biodiversity impacts of a future windmill in a specific area. The species most relevant for these biodiversity assessments are birds and bats such as red and black kite and alpine swift, which fly at a height of 80 to 200 meters where rotors and turbulences might harm or kill them. All assessments of the approval procedure are conducted by consultancy firms that may sub-contract thematic sections like the mapping of birds to specialists. UNIQUE was sub-contracted to assess the distribution of bird species at three locations that are considered technically suitable for producing wind energy.
