Carbon Finance for Grazing Management
Background
Rangelands cover about 400 million hectares or more than 40 % of China’s territory. Large areas of grassland are degraded due to unsustainable management practices. In China’s Huangnan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Government agencies together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)-China and the private sector are exploring opportunities for rangeland restoration as well as related soil carbon sequestration and emission reductions activities. UNIQUE was involved in the feasibility study of this project and was asked to support the project through methodology development and project validation.
Our contribution
- Preparation of a revised methodology for carbon crediting from restoration of degraded pasturelands.
- Development of the main elements of the proposed crediting methodology relevant to validation.
- Ensuring compatibility of the elements with the requirements of the validator.
