Whole Farm Greenhouse Gas Accounting Systems

Background

Country specific emission factors and site specific information required to develop national greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting systems for the agricultural sector or respective nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) often do not exist. In this context, whole farm accounting systems are essential for farmers to manage their emissions and assess their farm level carbon potential for possible accounting. For this assignment, farm level agricultural GHG accounting systems were reviewed which were suitable for smallholder conditions in developing countries. The results of the study were summarized in a paper.

Our contribution

  • Review of existing whole farm accounting systems e.g. Unilever Cool Farm Tool, EX-ACT.
  • Review of the Kenya Agricultural Carbon Project approach.
  • Systems analysis in terms of the suitability for smallholder agriculture in developing countries.
  • Concept on how to use farm level accounting for the development of landscape level GHG systems.
  • Discussion of remaining gaps for applying agricultural GHG accounting beyond the farm level.
